A Fresh Perspective on Telenovela Production
When I tell people that I am a journalism major, they often assume that I’m interested in broadcast news and that I want to be an anchor in front of a camera. While I’m flattered that they think I am charismatic enough for that, I have never pictured myself doing anything in front of the camera, because I ironically don’t think I’m charismatic for that. All that being said, I have very little knowledge about video production, whether it be news, film, or television. But recently in Dr. A’s class about telenovelas, I’ve been enlightened to a completely different perspective that I had before about production.
Over the past couple weeks we’ve been studying out the fast-paced, exciting and arduous process of telenovela production. If there’s one thing that I’ve learned in these lectures, there is a lot more that goes into these productions than I initially thought. From the hard deadlines of the writing team, to actors keeping up with constant changes in script, to the production team's organization of minute details, there is nothing simple about production of telenovelas. At the end of each of those lectures, all I think about is how much pressure there must be on the people working on telenovelas. I sympathize for the actors, but really I think about the executive producers and assistants, as well as the writers. They are all required to put in a lot of effort in their work, but also they are required to work well with one another. We discussed in class the various tensions that exist within the telenovela universe, but what I found myself pondering over during lecture was the balance that is required between these teams. For example, the Executive vs. Writers tension is a battle between a telenovela being a social phenomenon and an art form or being an industrial product that makes money. I feel like there is a very fine line between the two, and to have a successful telenovela, executives and writers need to meet at that fine line.
After learning about the consumption of telenovelas and seeing the presentations on the consumption of everybody’s various telenovelas, it really puts the production side of things into perspective. I think Dr. A worded it perfectly when she said the process is like Pac-Man; once broadcast starts of the telenovela, consumption kicks in and production is on their toes to keep content going. As I continue watching the well-acclaimed production that is Avenida Brasil, I’ll definitely be keeping in mind the extensively detailed process and the hard-working crew that pulls it all off.
Telenovela Production
As finance major, my understanding of the media and
entertainment industry does not extend far beyond what was discussed in my
Entertainment Law course. Before covering the topic in Dr. A’s class, I had no
knowledge over television production and much less on telenovela production.
Now as a student in Dr. A’s class, the production of telenovelas is a topic
that I have enjoyed learning about because it has changed how I now think about
and view telenovelas as well as the actors featured in them. As a viewer of telenovelas, I had previously
viewed them in a simple and almost self-centered way categorizing them as merely my form of
entertainment without considering how the telenovela was produced. I enjoyed
watching the captivating and melodramatic story unfold without really giving
any thought on how each episode was manufactured and the talent required of
each actor to make the story come to life.
After learning about all that goes on behind the scenes of a
telenovela in order to get an episode filmed, I now know that more people are
involved than I would have ever imagined. Previously, I assumed that the writer of a telenovela was only one person writing everything. I was not aware of the existence of a team. Along with the main author, there is
also a writing team that consists of “dialoguistas” that are usually experts on
a particular type of scene and are responsible for writing the dialogue for their
respective types of scenes, whether that be humorous scenes, romantic scenes,
and so on. The main author outlines a
whole episode and then delegates scenes among his dialoguistas. I think it makes sense to have specialized
dialoguistas because it allows for certain themes to be consistent throughout
the telenovela. For example, having one dialoguista write the majority of the
humor scenes for each episode allows the telenovela as a whole to have consistency
in how humor is framed and portrayed throughout all of its episodes.
I was also surprised at the existence of various directors.
The main director, or Director General, counts with assistance of other
directors to handle certain scenes, especially scenes “de exterior.” The
production team has an executive producer, general producer, a script, and
production assistants. The role I found most interesting was the role of a
script because it was not a role I would have imagined to exist. After learning
about the role of the script, I realized the importance of having someone on
the set that is responsible for the sequence of the scenes and the small
details of each scene that can be missed by directors. I feel as if the role of
the script is crucial in the production of the telenovela. because they are able to
perfect many scenes. However, even then scripts can miss details. As I have
been watching Pasion De Gavilanes, I have noticed a few scenes where the script
missed some details. For example, in one episode, Ximena is
wearing a see-through shirt on the first scene. However, after a few scenes, she reappears wearing
a tank top under the see-through shirt. I wonder why the first scene with
Ximena was not re-filmed considering the wardrobe malfunction.
As we watched the videos Dr. A took while telenovelas scenes
were being filmed and as Dr. A discussed the daily activities of actors, I was exposed
to ideas I had never dimensioned before. Up to this point, when I had watched
telenovelas, I was so consumed by the telenovela that I did not clearly draw
the line between reality and the telenovela plot. I didn't identify Norma
Elizondo as Danna Garcia, an actress, singer, and philanthropist. Instead, I
identified Norma Elizondo as being Norma Elizondo, a rich women that is
separated from the man she loves because of the difference in socioeconomic
class. I think my mixing of fictional characters with reality is the result
of the talent of actresses and actors in telenovelas. When they cry, their faces are covered in distress. During romantic
scenes, their passion and happiness beams from their eyes. They make their
acting seem so realistic, and easy that I forget to remember that these are
actors who make a living off their ability to pretend to be fictional
characters in telenovelas.
Learning about production, however, has opened my eyes to
view telenovelas as an art and its actors as truly talented people. When they
are crying, it’s not because they are seriously sad. It’s because of their
talented ability to control their emotions and display them in a natural and
realistic way. Now, when I watch episodes of Pasion de Gavilanes, I find myself
wondering how Norma and Juan are able to convey such strong chemistry and
affection just by the way they look at each other. I start wondering how many
shots it took to get a scene right. I start observing if the scene is a studio
scene or an exterior scene and which director is handling the scene. Besides
viewing the telenovela as a form of entertainment, I also view it as an art
that is result of the tremendous talent of both the people behind the scenes as well as the ones in
front of the camera.
Production
When
thinking of the production differences in the U.S. for movies and
Spanish-speaking countries for Telenovelas, I’ve realized that everything about the productions are different. In America, movies are the biggest productions that provide
the most profit. On average, most Hollywood movies take
about 45-60 days of production, but post production can be from around 6 months
to a year. They also have many opportunities to perfect scenes and time to
watch the movie from start to finish to see what they want to change about the
characters or the scene.
With telenovelas, we have learned
that sometimes a telenovela will air every day with a new episode, which means
that the actors are busy continually shooting their scenes with little to no
breaks on their tight time schedule. Even on the weekends, if their show doesn't air, they are preparing for new week's shoots and writers are writing more of the scripts. As telenovelas are the biggest productions
in Spanish-speaking countries, it’s a very different production world than what
we are accustomed to here.
One thing that is similar is the
actual process of shooting the scenes. To us in the audience, it looks very
normal and comfortable for the actors. To us, it seems as if they are perfect
at their jobs. In reality, some scenes are shot many, many times sometimes only to
fix miniscule things such as a piece of hair in the way or to have their makeup
running down their face just right. Or when we are watching a very raunchy
scene, thinking that both characters are naked, they actually are not and are
wearing sticky boobs or little pieces of clothing to cover themselves up. Or when actors have to kiss in a
scene, one actor might have a breath mint inside her mouth to distract her from
thinking she is actually kissing the guy. With today’s production, special
effects and deception from the angle you’re filming can make anything look
real.
What I found most interesting is that
social medias for the telenovelas and producers oftentimes show what’s really
happening backstage or on the set. Sometimes, it’s very awkward. Other times,
it’s really fun. There are definitely different scenes that look more comfortable than
others.
Worldwide, production is a very
popular topic and is needed in every country, whether it’s for telenovelas,
movies, or TV shows. However, I’ve learned that what you see in the final
production might not have been exactly what happened live on the scene.

Telenovela Production in Brazil
Having discussed Latin American
telenovela production during class, I am struck by how much production has
improved over the years. The classic telenovelas like Betty, La Fea continue to permeate Colombian culture and are so
ingrained that they have become part of the social fabric of the country. It’s
only natural that such a beloved form of entertainment improves over time as
more stakeholders realize how popular their telenovelas have become and
continue to be. After watching Avenida
Brasil, I realize how big an investment it is to make a telenovela with
such high quality. Rede Globo has dominated the Brazilian national networks
since the 1970s and continues to make high quality productions that are both
socially relevant and comment on the state of the nation. These productions not
only provide entertainment to the majority of Brazilians, but influence how
they form their Brazilian identities. Avenida
Brasil was the first of its kind to represent the middle class in a
realistic way, which made is accessible to a large and growing percent of the Brazilian
population. This is made possible by the high quality productions of Rede
Globo, as well as the research that must have taken place before and during the
writing of the script. Because Rede Globo dominates the Brazilian networks,
they have both the budget and time to do thorough research about their telenovelas,
putting them a step above all other networks in terms of accuracy and
entertainment.
Because of their popularity and
extremely high budget, the production site of Rede Globo is massive and
impressive. The quality of Globo’s productions are highly competitive with
international telenovelas and popular series, even film. Rio de Janeiro
continues to be a huge telenovela production site since Globo constructed their
studio in western Rio de Janeiro. Globo’s production site and sets are so
impressive that they could be entire towns that they often refer to as the “dream
factory”. Most of the production site is located in a forest and includes up to
10 different sets. Because of Globo’s size, they have production assistants and
actors that are contracted on a year to year basis, monopolizing on the talent
pool of the country. Because Globo is able to contract their directors,
producers, and actors, they will always have the first and best pick of the top
talent in the country, which further strengthens their reign on the production business
in Brazil. Rede Globo is an impressive and massive company that will continue
to put out extremely high quality productions that not only serve as
entertainment, but contribute to the social discourse of the county itself.
Even after Globo airs its
telenovelas, they send out market researchers in order to sample the public’s
perceptions of the telenovela. Globo will use up to two or three focus groups
per episode in order to determine what is working and what is not. They have
the power and the resources to write and produce in real time that reflects the
tastes of the views, and at the same time increases their viewer ratings. This
is an impressive feat for a production network to be so close to the viewers
and to consistently produce telenovelas that are instant hits. These
telenovelas form part of the collective memory and national identity of
Brazilians, as well as serving as a cultural export to the rest of the world.
